FAFSA to Qualify for Financial Aid

It is recommended that you complete the FAFSA online. The website for the FAFSA is www.fafsa.ed.gov. The first thing you need to do is register for a PIN. This can be done by clicking the PIN Site icon at the top of the page. Once you have registered your PIN, you can complete the FAFSA by simply clicking START HERE on the FAFSA home page. There are two documents that may be useful in completing the FAFSA home page. Both of these documents can be found by clicking the Student Aid on the WEB icon at the top of the FAFSA home page. Once there, click the Tools and Resources button found on the left-hand menu. The first document is under Completing the FAFSA. Push Go and download the PDF for 2018-2019 college school year. This document is a comprehensive overview of the FAFSA. The second document can be found in Tools and Resources under FAFSA on the Web Worksheet. Click Go and download the 2017-2018 school year.

Please complete the FAFSA as soon as you can.  Students can file a 2018-19 FAFSA as early as October 1, 2018. The deadline for the State of Michigan is March 1, 2019. Please contact me with any questions.

College Application Process at Summit Academy High School

Apply no later than December break if you are interested in scholarships from the college. Most colleges automatically enter your information into their scholarship data banks when your application is received. There is a great deal of money generated by most colleges that are specifically for their students. You, therefore, must apply and be accepted before you can qualify for these scholarships. Seniors who wish to attend college need to be certain the counseling department is notified of each and every application made. This includes all online applications and on-site applications. Applying online is highly recommended by most universities today. If you choose online, you must give your counselor the “counselor section” of the application so your transcript can be mailed out. If you do not apply online, as soon as you complete your application, return it to your counselor along with a check for the application fee. Your counselor will complete the application and mail it. Remember, the longer you take to complete the application, the longer it takes to receive a reply from the college. You also risk losing out on your choice of college, if the college you hope to attend ends their application deadline earlier than they advertise. We urge you to complete your applications as soon as possible. Contact us today if you have any questions.

Community Service

Summit Academy High School encourages all of our students to give back to the community through community service. We recommend the following amount of service for each grade level. The community service hours are applied to the school year they were completed including the summer. 9th: 5 Hours; 10th: 5 Hours; 11th: 5 Hours; 12th: 5 Hours. All forms must be have an official signature.

Some examples of approved community service are:

1. Volunteering at a city or county public library.
2. Tutoring at an elementary or middle school
3. Volunteering at a recreation center or local events.
4. Going with a church youth group to work at a soup kitchen.

  • Big Sun Athletic Scholarship
    Amount: $500
    Deadline: June 19, 2018The BigSun Organization is proud to be able to help young athletes succeed in their academic pursuits. In order to do our part we are offering an annual scholarship to a deserving student. All student athletes are eligible regardless of the sport they are engaged in or the capacity in which they participate. The student must be a high school senior or be attending a post secondary institute.   • Saginaw Community Foundation
    Amount: $500+
    Deadline: February 15, 2018Community volunteers of all ages and backgrounds review a packet of applications from students they do not know. These volunteers score the students in 10 different areas – such as leadership, volunteer service, extracurricular activities and essays – according to the provided guidelines. To assure fairness, every student is reviewed by five different volunteers and their score is averaged. These scores determine the student that will be awarded each scholarship.   • Kroger launches “I Can Make History” contest Kroger invites students to showcase their talents and win $71,000 in scholarships and prizes during The Kroger Co. of Michigan’s ninth annual “I Can Make History” contest, which kicked off Jan. 6.Students in the fourth through 12th grades are encouraged to demonstrate their creativity in categories for art, essay, music and poetry.Besides individual awards, Kroger will offer a $3,000 Best in Show Scholarship and a $5,000 School Leadership Award as part of the $71,000 presented.
